summer birding
July in Alaska
July offers peak summer birding across Alaska. Seabird colonies are at maximum activity, shorebird chicks are hatching on the tundra, and Humpback Whales attract seabirds to feeding frenzies in coastal waters. Denali's alpine zones are accessible and alive with breeding birds.

Trip planning notes
- Join a Kenai Fjords boat tour from Seward for exceptional seabird diversity including murrelets and auklets.
- Denali access changes by season and road-recovery status. For 2026, transit buses operated only to Mile 43 and Eielson Visitor Center was closed; check NPS for the current year's road and bus limits before planning alpine birding.
- Salmon runs begin drawing Bald Eagles to streams; watch for concentrated raptor activity.
Regional reality check
Conditions vary enormously across Alaska. Southeast Alaska, Anchorage, the Interior, Nome, the Aleutians, and the Arctic coast can have very different weather, access, migration timing, and daylight in the same month. Treat statewide averages as orientation, not a local forecast.
