Corvids
American Crow
Corvus brachyrhynchos
A medium-sized, all-black corvid smaller than a raven, with a fan-shaped tail and a familiar cawing call. The Northwestern Crow was formerly treated as a separate species but was lumped with American Crow in 2020.
Current regional viewing notes
Hoonah shoreline, harbor, and beach areas; common along the coast of Southeast Alaska.
Dataset note: This legacy field can be specific to Southeast Alaska/Hoonah and is not a complete statewide range statement.
Habitat
Coastal beaches, tidal flats, harbors, and forest edges.
Diet
Omnivorous — shellfish, fish, insects, berries, carrion, and human scraps.
Natural history note
The former Northwestern Crow was merged into American Crow by the American Ornithological Society in 2020 because no consistent genetic or vocal differences could be found.
