Thrushes
American Robin
Turdus migratorius
A familiar large thrush with a warm orange-red breast, dark gray upperparts, and a cheerful caroling song. It is one of the most widespread and recognizable songbirds in North America.
Current regional viewing notes
Lawns, gardens, forest clearings, and open areas throughout Hoonah; often seen pulling earthworms from grassy areas.
Dataset note: This legacy field can be specific to Southeast Alaska/Hoonah and is not a complete statewide range statement.
Habitat
Lawns, gardens, forest clearings, parks, and woodland edges.
Diet
Earthworms, insects, and berries; diet shifts from mostly invertebrates in summer to fruit in fall and winter.
Natural history note
American Robins can see ultraviolet light, which helps them detect the faint UV trails left by earthworms in the soil when foraging on lawns.
