Dark-eyed Junco (Oregon race)

Junco hyemalis

A small, neat sparrow with a dark hood, rusty-brown back, pinkish-brown sides, and white outer tail feathers that flash in flight. The Oregon subspecies is the form found in Southeast Alaska.

Current regional viewing notes

Forest edges, gardens, trails, and brushy areas throughout Hoonah; often feeds on the ground in small flocks.

Dataset note: This legacy field can be specific to Southeast Alaska/Hoonah and is not a complete statewide range statement.

Habitat

Coniferous and mixed forest edges, brushy clearings, gardens, and parks.

Diet

Seeds, insects, and berries; forages primarily on the ground.

Natural history note

Dark-eyed Juncos flash their white outer tail feathers when startled, which may confuse predators and signal alarm to flock mates.
