Pacific Wren
Troglodytes pacificus
A tiny, dark brown wren with a short cocked tail and an incredibly complex, cascading song that rings through the understory of old-growth forests. It was formerly lumped with the Winter Wren.
Current regional viewing notes
Dense forest undergrowth, root tangles, and mossy logs throughout forests near Hoonah; most easily detected by its exuberant song.
Dataset note: This legacy field can be specific to Southeast Alaska/Hoonah and is not a complete statewide range statement.
Habitat
Dense understory of old-growth coniferous forests, root tangles, and mossy fallen logs.
Diet
Insects, spiders, and other invertebrates gleaned from moss, bark, and forest floor debris.
Natural history note
The Pacific Wren's song contains over 30 notes per second and lasts up to 10 seconds — one of the most complex songs of any North American bird.
