Songbirds

Ruby-crowned Kinglet

Corthylio calendula

A tiny, active songbird with olive-green plumage, a bold white eye-ring, and a hidden ruby-red crown patch that males flash when excited. Its loud, cascading song is surprisingly powerful for its size.

Current regional viewing notes

Coniferous and mixed forests near Hoonah; very common during spring and fall migration in forest edges and brushy areas.

Dataset note: This legacy field can be specific to Southeast Alaska/Hoonah and is not a complete statewide range statement.

Habitat

Coniferous forests, mixed woodlands, and brushy areas during migration.

Diet

Insects, spiders, and some berries and seeds gleaned from foliage.

Natural history note

Despite weighing only about 6 grams, the Ruby-crowned Kinglet sings one of the loudest songs relative to body size of any North American bird.
