Townsend's Warbler

Setophaga townsendi

A striking warbler with a black-and-yellow face pattern, olive-green back, and bold black streaking on yellow underparts. It forages high in the canopy of coniferous forests.

Current regional viewing notes

Coniferous forests around Hoonah, especially in tall Sitka spruce and hemlock stands; often forages high in the canopy.

Dataset note: This legacy field can be specific to Southeast Alaska/Hoonah and is not a complete statewide range statement.

Habitat

Mature coniferous forests, especially old-growth Sitka spruce and western hemlock.

Diet

Insects and spiders gleaned from high conifer branches; also some seeds and berries.

Natural history note

Townsend's Warblers hybridize with Hermit Warblers where their ranges overlap in the Pacific Northwest, and the Townsend's range is slowly expanding southward at the Hermit Warbler's expense.
