Warblers
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Setophaga coronata
A handsome warbler with a bright yellow rump, yellow side patches, and a yellow crown patch. The Myrtle subspecies, found in Alaska, has a white throat and bold black streaking.
Current regional viewing notes
Coniferous and mixed forests, forest edges, and brushy areas throughout Hoonah; one of the most common warblers in the area.
Dataset note: This legacy field can be specific to Southeast Alaska/Hoonah and is not a complete statewide range statement.
Habitat
Coniferous and mixed forests, forest edges, and open woodlands.
Diet
Insects caught by flycatching and gleaning; also berries, especially in fall and winter.
Natural history note
Yellow-rumped Warblers can digest the waxy coating of bayberries and wax myrtle, an ability unique among warblers that allows them to winter farther north than any other warbler species.
