Warblers
Yellow Warbler
Setophaga petechia
A brilliant all-yellow warbler with reddish-brown breast streaks in males. It is one of the most widespread warblers in North America and a quintessential bird of willow thickets.
Current regional viewing notes
Willow thickets, alder patches, and riparian areas near streams around Hoonah; common near the Spasski River area.
Dataset note: This legacy field can be specific to Southeast Alaska/Hoonah and is not a complete statewide range statement.
Habitat
Willow thickets, alder patches, riparian areas, and shrubby wetland edges.
Diet
Insects and spiders gleaned from foliage; caterpillars are a primary food for nestlings.
Natural history note
When Brown-headed Cowbirds lay eggs in a Yellow Warbler's nest, the warbler sometimes builds a new nest floor over the parasitic egg — nests with up to six layers have been found.
