Bank Swallow
Riparia riparia
The smallest North American swallow, brown above with a distinctive brown breast band. Nests in colonies by excavating burrows in sandy banks and bluffs—a common sight along Kodiak's coastal cliffs.
Where to look
Sandy bluffs and eroded coastal banks around Kodiak Island; look for nest hole colonies in cut banks near water.
Habitat
Sandy riverbanks and coastal bluffs for nesting; open areas near water for foraging.
Diet
Flying insects.
Natural history note
Bank Swallows can recognize their own chick's calls from hundreds of other calls in a crowded colony—essential for feeding the right nestling.
