Common Raven

Corvus corax

The largest passerine bird in the world, with all-black plumage, a massive bill, and a wedge-shaped tail in flight. Ravens are highly intelligent, curious, and an iconic presence throughout Kodiak Island.

Where to look

Everywhere on Kodiak Island: harbor areas, town dumpsters, forests, and tundra ridges.

Habitat

Extremely versatile; forests, tundra, coasts, and urban areas.

Diet

Omnivore: carrion, small animals, eggs, fish, berries, and human refuse.

Natural history note

Common Ravens have demonstrated problem-solving abilities comparable to great apes and can plan for future needs, a rare cognitive skill.
