Herring Gull
Larus argentatus
A large, classic gull with pink-gray wings, a red spot on the lower mandible, and yellow eyes. Present in Kodiak's harbors throughout the year, often mixing with Glaucous-winged Gulls.
Where to look
St. Paul Harbor, Kodiak beaches, and coastal areas; look for the pink-gray wing tips distinguishing them from Glaucous-winged.
Habitat
Coastal areas, harbors, and large inland lakes.
Diet
Fish, invertebrates, carrion, eggs, and refuse.
Natural history note
Herring Gulls learn to drop shellfish from height onto hard surfaces, and parents teach this skill to their young.
