Orange-crowned Warbler
Leiothlypis celata
One of Alaska's dullest warblers—olive-green overall with faint streaking and a hidden orange crown patch rarely visible in the field. Despite its appearance, it's a hardy early spring migrant.
Where to look
Dense alder and willow shrubs throughout Kodiak Island; arrives earlier in spring than most other warblers.
Habitat
Dense shrubs, alder thickets, and brushy forest edges.
Diet
Insects, berries, and occasionally flower nectar.
Natural history note
The Orange-crowned Warbler's orange crown patch is almost never visible unless the bird is greatly alarmed or displaying.
