Pine Siskin

Spinus pinus

A small, streaky, brown finch with flash patches of yellow in the wings and tail. Often found in large, nomadic flocks moving through Kodiak's coniferous forests in search of seeds.

Where to look

Spruce forests and alder thickets around Kodiak town and Fort Abercrombie; often visits backyard feeders.

Habitat

Coniferous and mixed forests.

Diet

Seeds (especially from conifers, birches, and alders), and occasionally insects.

Natural history note

Pine Siskins can store up to 10% of their body weight in food in a throat pouch, helping them survive cold Alaskan nights.
