Wandering Tattler
Tringa incana
A medium-sized gray shorebird with a bobbing 'teetering' walk and a loud wailing call. A characteristic bird of Kodiak's wave-washed rocky beaches and kelp-draped reefs.
Where to look
Rocky intertidal zones at Fort Abercrombie, Cape Chiniak, and Pasagshak Bay.
Habitat
Mountain stream gravels for breeding; rocky coastal shores during migration and winter.
Diet
Aquatic insects, crustaceans, and small fish.
Natural history note
Wandering Tattlers are so named for their wide-ranging migration from the South Pacific to Alaska each year.
