Western Grebe
Aechmophorus occidentalis
The largest North American grebe, with a long snakelike neck, bright red eye, and striking black-and-white plumage. An uncommon visitor to Kodiak coastal waters.
Where to look
Chiniak Bay and larger offshore waters; look for this rarity from the Kodiak ferry and Nyman Peninsula.
Habitat
Freshwater lakes for breeding; coastal bays in winter.
Diet
Fish primarily; also crustaceans and polychaetes.
Natural history note
Western Grebes perform elaborate synchronized courtship 'rushing' displays in which pairs run side by side across the water.
